The two-year New Media Arts MFA program offers students a unique, interdisciplinary curriculum where leading practitioners in the arts and computer sciences come together to work with students on developing aesthetic and critical perspectives in emergent technologies. Through cross-disciplinary dialog and in-class instruction, our MFA students exercise the critical thinking and professional skills necessary to become effective researchers, makers, and innovators in the field. Our curriculum includes hands-on, studio-based courses focusing on responsive technologies and their artistic applications. Graduate seminar courses address topics ranging from newly evolving issues within contemporary arts to the history and theory of New Media Arts.
The New Media Arts MFA program at UIC represents the oldest interdisciplinary program of study in the U.S. that formally offers a degree in advanced visualization. Our program’s decades-long partnership with the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (a graduate research facility within the College of Engineering) provides a unique opportunity for artists, computer scientists, and engineers to collaborate on projects and to pursue cross-disciplinary research.
The MFA degree in New Media Arts qualifies our graduates for a variety of career paths, including university-level teaching, independent studio arts practice, and industry-oriented research and development.
